How will your Georgia workers’ compensation claim impact your company provided group health, dental, life insurance, 401(k) other benefits?
As I discuss in this video, some of the employer provided benefits you are paying for through payroll deductions may depend on your being an “active” employee receiving regular wages.
For example, you may have elected to pay for family health insurance, or a term life insurance policy in which the premiums are automatically deducted from your check.
If you are not able to work due to a work injury, however, your weekly income will be paid in the form of TTD (temporary total disability) benefits from your employer’s workers’ comp insurance company. You will not receive regular paychecks while you are out under workers’ compensation.
Will this change in your employee status impact your family’s access to group health, dental, life insurance or other benefits?
The answer is “it depends” – some employers continue to keep these other benefits in place, some will give you the option of keeping these benefits if you pay for them, while others may try to cancel your access.
The point I am making with this video is that you need to ask about your company’s policies so you and your family do not face any unpleasant and unexpected surprises.
If your HR department won’t give you a straight answer we can often help you find out. So if you are not currently represented and you need to know how your work injury and changed employment status will impact your access to employer provided benefits,
